What are the values you live by?
In the past few months I've heard 3 stories from executive leaders who left their workplace because they felt their values were deeply compromised, and they just couldn't stay.
These are their stories to tell so I won't share any details, but I can say their values were about being a good human. Their values led them to stand up for what was right and fair for others (it was not about themselves.)
It takes huge courage to say with your feet "no, this is not OK." To go against the tide. To let others know that this is so important, that you can't let it slide.
In my book "Uncomfortable Growth: Own Your Reinvention" I share how your core values are the ones that guide you the most in life - especially when things are difficult. Having your values undermined actually physically hurts - you feel it in your body - a gut wrench, a fluttering heart or a heat rash. This is because your values exist in your subconscious, and when they are crossed it creates intense emotion: from extreme anger through to tears of frustration or upset.
There can be a real cost when you stand up for your values - perhaps you become collateral damage. Or you have to leave because staying is untenable. This is a hard pill to swallow when your intentions and values are pure.
But I believe not standing up for your values is a much greater cost.
For those who stand up for their values - it's a testament to the clarity and conviction you have in who you are, and what you believe. Not just words, but beliefs you will defend because they deeply matter.
In a world full of uncertainty and chaos, thats priceless. And for every person who may be too scared to stand up today, they are inspired to be stronger tomorrow.
To these 3 incredible, values-driven leaders - you know who you are, and you inspire me too!
